Let’s face it everyone is mobile obsessed. Whether it be a phone or tablet, it’s the first thing we look at when we wake up and the last thing we look at before crashing. It’s like a relationship. Except, it’s not a person, it can’t talk back (glorious), it’s an everlasting, unconditional, us and our mobiles forever, kind of love affair.
So, is it a surprise that more than ever, travel shoppers are depending on their mobile devices to find them their next vacation fix?
It shouldn’t be. With a 20% increase in bookings on travel websites in the first half of 2014 compared to the 2% increase in desktop bookings, I’d say travel shopping on mobiles will only continue to rise – and the statistics are on my side. If anything, this is a huge opportunity for hotels to enhance their mobile experience and drive more bookings.
Most of us don’t even dare to leave home without a mobile in our hand. We have to admit, we all know that one person who has forgotten or lost their phone. They usually look as though they have lost their best friend and whine all day about how naked they feel without it as their mobile withdrawals start to kick in. This alone only justifies how mobiles now stand on a powerful, continually growing, platform.
If we take a look at some of these rising statistics we can see how mobile isn’t just a “nice to have” but becoming “a must have” in today’s world.
• Smartphones and tablets account for 21% of hotel bookings in 2014
• By 2018 mobile bookings will account for 35% of all online bookings
• 60% of business travelers book via mobile apps
• Mobile share of “hotel” searches grew 86% faster in the summer months than any other time
This is why how you represent yourself on mobile is important.
It’s like a first date, you want to put your best forward. Shoppers want to see pictures. Lots of pictures! They want to know what makes your hotel unique, interesting, what you can offer them, and most of all, they want a mobile site that is optimized.
Because let’s face it, not optimizing your mobile site is like saying yes to a date but then slamming the door in their face when they come to pick you up.
